Joseph J. Cammisa

Joseph Cammisa, of Silver Spring, MD died on Friday, October 5, 2018.  He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. “Dee,” as he liked to be called by his grandchildren, “Joe,” as he was called by his wife, or “Joey,” as he was  known by other family members, will be missed but always remembered as a caring family man & educator.

Joe was the youngest child born to Antoinette and Joseph Cammisa Sr. in Shelton, Connecticut (CT). Growing up in a first generation Italian family, he was very close to his brother Patrick and his maternal grandmother.

A pattern of hard work that started in high school working at his father’s business, ‘Cammisa’s Garage.’

At twenty years old, he met the love of his life, Kathryn (Kitty) while they were both starting their careers, he as a young teacher and she as a young nurse. They married after the Great Naugatuck flood in 1955. Their first children Kathee and Caryle were born in Derby, CT soon after.

They moved with their young family to Wheaton, MD in 1958 so that Joe could pursue his teaching career in Montgomery County. Two more children followed, Laurie and little Joe. He progressed quickly in his career, eventually becoming assistant principal at Springbrook High School.  Joe and Kitty made life-long friends in the school system and he distinguished himself by helping troubled students.

Education was important to Joe, which he instilled in his children, along with other life lessons, like the importance of being frugal & taking care of each other. His retirement was spent with his beloved Kitty, in devotion to others through volunteer work and spending time with his grandchildren, who were his joy.

From trips with fellow retired teachers educators, to wintering at the beach in Siesta Key, FL., he and Kitty enjoyed their many travels together.

Joe will be remembered by his friends for his sense of humor and his loyal friendship. His family already misses his sensitivity and dedicated affection.

He is survived by his devoted wife Kitty; his brother Patrick; his four children Kathee, Caryle, Laurie, and Joe Jr; his five grandchildren Kate, Chris, Natalie, Sabrina, and Ronan; and his two great grandchildren Brendan and Jeremy.
